Fueling Kids’ Futures

Programs in Michigan administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester

Fueling Kids’ Futures is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of school-age children.

Each week, volunteers, in cooperation with school officials, distribute bags filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) to “hunger insecure” school-age children.  These students are participants in the government subsidized Free or Reduced Fee Lunch Program.

The goal of the Fueling Kids’ Futures program is to keep these children from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.

Fueling Kids’ Futures is pleased to announce the Kroger Co. of Michigan, as the program’s Food Partner. Kroger and Fueling Kids’ Futures missions are aligned.  Both organizations work to advance positive impacts concerning hunger insecurity to build stronger communities.

“We are incredibly proud to support the Fueling Kids’ Futures program and partner with an organization like the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, who shares our deep commitment to making a positive impact in the community,” said Cam Barrett, Corporate Affairs Manager for the Kroger Co. of Michigan. “By combining our resources and efforts, we look forward to helping reduce the number of children facing food insecurity in communities throughout Southeast Michigan. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

In all of the communities who make up Fueling Kids’ Futures, volunteers every week during the school year,  ensure the hunger-insecure school-age children in their respective communities have food to take home with them on Friday. These children have a better weekend because of having food to eat.  We know that children that show up to school healthy and well-nourish learn better.  They are more likely to attend school and take advantage of educational opportunities.  By doing so they have a chance for a better future by becoming contributing members of their communities.

Bret Serbin said “Hunger is a real life-threatening pandemic that is plaguing the lives of young Americans.  It is a rumble in the stomach that demands to be silenced”.  These words are so true today.  Feeding a child is a simple thing that can be taken for granted.  But, for the children served by the Fueling Kids’ Futures program and their families, a year’s bags of food can be life-changing.

Thank you, to the Kroger Co. of Michigan, for caring about these children and their futures as much as we do.
